It’s hard to believe that Andie MacDowell could outdo her 2021 Cannes Film Festival looks—which debuted her now beloved, iconic gray hair—but the actress somehow managed to do it. At this year’s closing ceremony, she wore a stunning emerald green gown and bejeweled eye makeup to match, no less.

The Maid star strutted the red carpet confidently in the floor-length satin number, which sported a chic high neckline and cap sleeves. Her salt-and-pepper curls sat on her shoulders, the front pieces pulled away from her face to allow her glittered eyes, executed by L’Oréal’s global makeup director Val Garland, to shine. Understated black strappy heels finished the ensemble.

MacDowell’s other festival looks were just as incredible (including, but not limited to a striped Dior haute couture gown from 2018, per Vogue), and while she looked absolutely gorgeous, it was clear that she cared most about having fun. In fact, at the premiere of Mother and Son, she and Helen Mirren quite literally danced down the red carpet together. They both attended the festival as L’Oréal ambassadors and, in a recap Instagram post, MacDowell thanked the brand for a beautiful time.

“To my fellow L’Oreal spokespeople, you all are remarkable. I’m in awe of you all every day for being strong, smart, and committed leaders. @helenmirren you are the best dance partner! I will cherish that moment together,” she wrote. “Full of joy and gratitude ❤️.”

Fans and followers adored her effortless glow and kind-hearted spirit. “You are a vision! So joyful!” one person commented. “You gorgeous, talented beauty ❤️❤️❤️,” another added. “So much joy and sparkle 😍,” someone else wrote.

That joy and sparkle comes from MacDowell’s determination to not just accept who she is at 64, but to love it. “We need to embrace where we are and love where we are. I don’t like the word accept,” she told France 24 during the festival. “I think we need to love where we are at every age because life is fleeting. We deserve to feel good about ourselves. And I think it’s very important that women support women in this.”

That’s not the first time she has spoken out about her feelings on aging and journey to self-love. MacDowell is passionate about empowering women—and herself—to embrace getting older. In fact, last year, she told NPR’s Fresh Air that she’s “never felt more beautiful” than she does at this stage in her life.

“We evolve and we age, and this is part of the process,” she added. “Aging is not about losing your beauty.”

If MacDowell is of any indication, it’s actually quite the opposite.
