Brockton Blessed by Ji: Jiyra Martinez owns travel beauty service

BROCKTON — The voice of the pilot preparing for takeoff was one of a Brockton woman's favorite sounds — as she sent her final confirmation emails to clients awaiting her beauty services in a different state.

Jiyra Martinez, the owner of Blessed By Ji, a traveling beauty service, found her niche accidentally.

After a lash tech in Brockton messed up her lash extensions, she was on a quest to learn independently.

Martinez started learning different techniques and later enrolled in esthetician school and graduated in 2021.

Traveling for work was a dream come true for the young entrepreneur.

Martinez always imagined a life with more possibilities, so she decided to create them for herself.

She went from working a regular desk job to being able to leave her hometown of Brockton and venture out into the world.

Currently, Blessed By Ji offers teeth whitening, lash extensions, one on one classes, eyebrow tinting and facials from her lash studio in Canton.

Earlier in the pandemic, traveling became very accessible since the prices of plane tickets were way down, Martinez said.

Martinez said that many customers were tired of staying home, not looking their best, and enjoyed the convenience of the services.

The house calls were probably clients' most attractive side of the business, and Martinez was booked daily.

Although the business during the pandemic has been amazing to the entrepreneur, more recently inflation has not been her friend.

Inflation has impacted her business by raising prices on goods, supplies and, the worst part, flights and gas.

Last year, Martinez was able to book a flight and an Airbnb for less than $200 dollars and keep most of her profits and invest back into the business.

Now she's lucky if she can cover the cost of a flight and stay.

"Because of inflation, it paused my last minute traveling a little bit. I plan trips in advance now," Martinez said.

The pause didn't hurt the business, as it allowed the owner to focus on other aspects of the company that needed improvement, including finding a rental space.

As many businesses shut down during the pandemic, it gave other new companies a chance to open and thrive against all odds.

Martinez was one of these businesses.

A real-estate agent reached out to Martinez and found a perfect lash studio in Canton.

The price was too reasonable to give up the opportunity.

Though it was a financial risk, Martinez knew it would be the next step in elevating her business.

"Scared money doesn't make money," Martinez said.

Martinez suggests business owners start no matter how hard it seems because nothing in life is easy.

The business started in 2019, but Martinez opened her e-commerce store in 2017, selling bathing suits, accessories, custom items, paintings and lash supplies for lash techs, durags and bonnets.

For the last five years, the entrepreneur worked hard to build client trust through quality products and services. 

Social media was her best friend, using content to grow her following to 10,000. 

"The best way to use Instagram is to learn the algorithm, stay serious about it and aim for a common theme. For example, if you're a model, don't over-edit, post clear pictures. People are going to want to know what you look like in person," Martinez said.

Aside from her beauty business Martinez is a talented artist and published model.

Currently, she is a brand ambassador for Icon Swim, an Instagram boutique with 1.3 million followers online.

The end goal for Martinez is to own a storefront in Boston and have multiple locations in several states.
