Ex-girlfriend accused of 'driving Micra at former partner'

A woman was accused of leaving her ex-boyfriend spreadeagled across the bonnet of her Nissan Micra – having earlier slapped him in a Tesco car park.

Heather Cherrie, 20, denied being the one behind the wheel of the silver hatchback when it crawled along South Street, Banbury, tailing the ex-partner and his new girlfriend on July 3 last year.

Prosecutor Robert Lindsey told jurors at Oxford Crown Court yesterday that Cherrie told the police she had been in Nottingham with her father and ‘couldn’t have been’ driving the Nissan. She did, however, accept that the car was hers.

Footage of the incident was played to the 12-strong jury as Mr Lindsey opened the Crown’s case.

The zoomed-in camera angle showed the ex-boyfriend, wearing a black t-shirt and with cropped dark hair, walking down South Street with his new partner, who was seen in the video with long, blonde hair.

The car was driven slowly along the road as Cherrie was ‘engaging them in conversation’, Mr Lindsey said.

The alleged dangerous driving involved the defendant moving the Nissan forward a short distance towards the ex-partner before she ‘puts her foot down and he goes over the bonnet’, the jury was told by the prosecutor.

Mr Lindsey said: “The defendant drives away. [The victim’s girlfriend] then calls the police and a short time later the defendant is arrested under caution.”

Earlier, the jury was told that Cherrie had been in a relationship with the alleged victim for two months in 2018.

Although they then separated, the former couple were said to have remained friends.

However, she became ‘increasingly verbally abusive towards him’ and he decided he had ‘had enough’, Mr Lindsey told the jury.

By the time of the alleged incidents last summer, the ex was in a new relationship.

On June 26, the ex-boyfriend, his new partner and her housemate were said to be on their way to the cinema when Cherrie emerged ‘from nowhere’. She was said to have been verbally abusive before slapping him in the face.

A week later, on July 3, the new couple had just left Tesco when Cherrie allegedly approached them in the car park shouting at her former partner.

She was accused of slapping him three times to the face, causing red marks. In response, he was said to have grabbed her arms to stop her from attacking him. As she broke away, it was claimed she ‘stamped’ on his shopping.

Mr Lindsey said the alleged dangerous driving incident happened later the same day.

Cherrie, of Manor Road, Brackley, denies dangerous driving and assault. The trial continues.
