This week’s episode of The Braid Up proves that a new age of stitch braids is upon us. We all know that the standard version of this classic protective style is already a vibe, but add in some extra designs? Game over. “We’re jazzing these braids up so they’re not the typical stitch braids that we’ve been getting for years and years,” says hairstylist and creator of this look Shateeka Garrison. “With these new stitch braids, you can add some originality to your look and make the style your own.” You might have a heart, a star, two stars—the designs can really be as unique as you want. Bottom line: Garrison’s star stitch-braided look is for sure a style you should pencil in for the new year.

Ready to take on these braids with star power? Read on for the best tips and tricks to DIY them like a pro.

1. Plan it out. Garrison says it’s best to have a framework for your style in mind before you begin braiding. Start by parting out the star and then work your way into the center braids. “A precision comb allows you to part, and grip the hair as you’re parting down so it’s easier to separate it,” adds Garrison.

2. Use oil. Flaky scalps just aren’t cute. To keep yours moisturized while wearing this style, apply a few drops of argan oil or peppermint oil every couple of days. The latter will curb itchiness too. 👀

3. Keep mousse handy. Apply some mousse to your braids before tying them up for bed. It is a solid way to ensure you’ll wake up to a flawless head of hair.

4. Invest in an adjustable silk bonnet. Obvi bonnets are key for keeping your hair protected as you sleep, but an adjustable bonnet will have a harder time slipping off your head in the middle of the night.
